Bath's historic centre wasn't built with soft play in mind, so let's be straight about it. In the city you have two real options: Better Play at Bath Sports and Leisure Centre, and a Sunday-morning drop-in at Baskervilles School of Gymnastics (£8 per child, including one adult). For a full soft-play barn with slides, ball pits and toddler zones, the best places are a short drive out, at Keynsham, Farrington Gurney or Trowbridge, all under 25 minutes away. If you'd rather stay central, the Holburne Museum and No.1 Royal Crescent both have genuinely kid-friendly indoor activities that skip soft play entirely.
What's actually in Bath itself
The centre is heritage buildings, shops and museums, not purpose-built play barns, so don't expect a Farrington's-style setup on your doorstep. There are, though, two proper indoor play options within Bath.
Better Play at Bath Sports and Leisure Centre
On North Parade Road, a short walk from the centre, this leisure centre has a fully enclosed five-storey soft play structure with climbing, crawling and slide sections. It's best known locally for soft play birthday parties (£216 for exclusive use, Saturday and Sunday afternoons, no minimum age), and also runs regular drop-in sessions. We couldn't confirm a current drop-in price from the operator's site, so check current prices and times, or call 01225 486905.
Baskervilles School of Gymnastics, Bath
Baskervilles runs a term-time-only Sunday soft play session (9-10am) for ages 0-5, in the gymnastics hall alongside coach-led action songs. It's pre-book only, £8 per child including one adult, £6 per extra sibling or adult, fees non-refundable. Treat it as a planned Sunday outing rather than a spontaneous rainy-day fallback.
The best short drives for proper soft play
If your kids need a bigger space to run off energy, these are real, currently-operating venues within roughly 20-25 minutes of central Bath.
Farrington's Playbarn, Farrington Gurney
About 11 miles and 22 minutes from Bath, between Bath and Bristol, the Playbarn has a three-level soft play structure with a multi-lane slide, ball pits and rope skywalks for up to 12s, plus a padded baby area (0-2) and toddler area (2-5). No booking needed, and there's a café on site. Confirmed pricing: £1.95 for one-year-olds and £4.95 for two-plus on standard days, rising to £2.95 and £6.25 at weekends and half-terms.
Baloo's Softplay, Trowbridge
Around 12 miles and 25 minutes from Bath, Baloo's is a multi-level centre with zones for babies, toddlers and juniors, ages 0-12, and a table-service café. Pricing bands exist by age, with under-1s free, but we found conflicting figures across listings sites, so check current prices directly with Baloo's before you travel.
Keynsham Leisure Centre soft play
Keynsham is the closest short-drive option, roughly 6 miles and 15 minutes away. The Better-run leisure centre has a soft play area for up to 8s, 60-minute sessions, no membership needed. As with Bath's own Better Play, we couldn't confirm a current drop-in price, so check before setting off.
Indoor museum options that aren't soft play
When soft play isn't what you're after, Bath's museums are the better rainy-day fallback, and this is where the centre genuinely delivers. Our Bath with kids guide covers these further, and our guide to Bath in the rain has more wet-weather options beyond kids' activities.
The Roman Baths are largely indoors and manageable with young children, with under-6s free and a children's audio guide, though pushchairs aren't allowed inside (you swap for a loaned carrier at reception). The Holburne Museum is free for under-18s and has a self-led "Space to Make" table plus discovery drawers and a family animal audio trail, all indoors, no ticket needed. No.1 Royal Crescent runs a children's sticker trail with activity packs by age, and children go free with a paying adult; check current prices for adult admission. Further out at Claverton, the American Museum & Gardens lets under-5s in free and runs an indoor family trail plus weekend creative activities and a monthly Brilliant Beasties session for preschoolers, though its main garden and play area are outdoors, so it suits a drier day better than a downpour.

If you're driving to any of these, our parking guide is worth checking before you set off, especially for central Bath where on-street parking is limited.
Is there soft play in central Bath?
Yes, two options: Better Play at Bath Sports and Leisure Centre on North Parade Road, and a Sunday-morning drop-in at Baskervilles School of Gymnastics for under-5s. Neither is a large dedicated play barn on the scale of Farrington's or Baloo's, so for a bigger space you'll need to drive out.
What's the best rainy-day option for toddlers specifically?
Baskervilles' Sunday session (0-5 years) is the most central toddler-friendly soft play, though it's term-time only and needs pre-booking. For an indoor museum alternative, the Holburne Museum's ground-floor "Space to Make" table is free, self-led and needs no ticket.
Are there any free indoor options for kids in Bath?
The Holburne Museum is free to enter for under-18s and has free self-led activities inside. The Victoria Art Gallery's permanent collection is also free, though it's more of a quiet gallery visit than an active play space. No.1 Royal Crescent lets children in free when accompanied by a paying adult.
Do you need to book soft play sessions in advance?
It varies. Baskervilles' Sunday soft play is pre-book only. Farrington's Playbarn says no advance booking is needed, you can just turn up. For Better Play, Keynsham Leisure Centre and Baloo's, check current booking requirements directly with the venue, as this can change with demand and school holidays.
Is the American Museum good for a rainy day with kids?
Partly. The museum building and its family trail are indoor, and under-5s get in free, but its main children's garden and play area are outdoors, so it suits a dry or lightly showery day better than a full washout.
How far is the nearest full soft play barn from central Bath?
Keynsham Leisure Centre is the closest at roughly 6 miles (about 15 minutes' drive). Farrington's Playbarn and Baloo's Softplay in Trowbridge are both around 11-12 miles out, roughly 20-25 minutes' drive depending on traffic.
